Futaleufú Riverkeeper prioritizes the preservation of the natural and cultural heritage of the Futaleufú Watershed through conservation and sustainable development initiatives.
With the town of Futaleufú on the brink of explosive urban growth, preemptively promoting local planning tools and sustainable development strategies is essential for the conservation of the region. In 2018, Riverkeeper led the charge to declare Futaleufú as a Zone of Touristic Interest (ZOIT), a classification that promotes sustainable tourism above other types of private development in the region. We also work with the Municipality of Futaleufú to develop management plans and ordinances, such as our Local Sustainable Energy Strategy, urban wetlands zoning, and the application of Tourism Sustainability indicators.
In 2020, Futaleufú Riverkeeper paired with Tierra Austral Land Trust as part of our plan to shift our conservation focus towards private conservation standards. This work revolves around the conservation of private lands through Conservation Guarantor Organizations (OGC) and Conservation Easements.
